Assess caching behaviour for settings
Currently, the caching behaviour for the various settings types is to cache the entire settings object, rather than just the settings value.
We should assess whether:
a) This is strictly necessary
b) There is any perfomance hit (compared to just caching the value)
c) Whether there is an advantage to be gained by changing to caching just the value
