Now that Atom supports ES6 packages I think it would be easier to find contributors if this package is converted to ES6. Also ES6 comes with new improvements and syntactic sugar that produces easy-to-read and easy-to-develop code.
I'll be glad to do the boring conversion and submit a PR if you're interested.
