The browser currently only stops GIFs in a few cases: when they are outside of the viewport of the document or the display CSS property set to none. There are a couple more cases to consider when GIFs could be stopped:
- The GIFs are on a background tab.
- The browser window is minimized.
- The browser window is obscured by an another window (=> see how window buffer purging works for a similar thing)
- The image width or height set to 0px.
GIF decoding can be expensive. Would be nice to avoid it whenever possible.
