Currently, there are a few ports (e.g. perl5, python, etc.) that require host dependencies installed. For instance, the perl5 port requires that GNU sed and binutils be installed on macOS systems. That said, there is no way currently for ports to know whether or not their required binaries are on $PATH
-- they just assume and proceed, leaving users with opaque error messages.
An example of this happening was with the perl5 port, where the build script required GNU sed. Without GNU sed, it failed to substitute the version number and the version number was a mess of DEFINEs.
